"Say Aah! Hippo Games in the Serengeti"

Date of Observation: November 2, 2019

Two hippos testing the limits of their yawns — or perhaps their tempers

Have you ever seen a face-off that begins with a yawn? In the Serengeti, that’s just how hippos settle scores. On a bright morning by the muddy riverbank, I had the joy of witnessing what I can only describe as the most exaggerated, comically serious “mouth-measuring contest” between two of nature’s largest comedians — the hippopotamuses.

These gentle-looking giants were anything but passive. With each enormous open-mouthed display, they seemed to be saying, “Mine’s bigger!” Their wide gapes weren’t just for show — it’s a blend of ritual, bluff, and boundary-setting. In the world of hippos, respect is often measured by the size of your open mouth!

As I watched, I couldn’t help but chuckle. The water splashed. Mud flew. Yet, not a single bite was exchanged. This wasn’t a fight, but a performance. A grumpy ballet of snorts and swirls, of pride and posturing. And when it was over, they sank back into the river, as if nothing had happened at all.
Show’s over! Back to floating peacefully like oversized marshmallows

What struck me most was the harmony beneath the bluster. Despite the theatrics, there was an unspoken understanding — a code among these creatures. A reminder, perhaps, that not every clash needs conflict, and not every contest needs a winner.

Watching them reminded me: in life, sometimes the loudest roars come from the most playful hearts.
