The Joyful Spirit of Tingatinga: Art from the TACS Cooperative

Tingatinga art, instantly recognizable by its bold colors and playful symmetry, is one of Tanzania’s most distinctive visual styles. Since its origins in the 1960s, the genre has blossomed into a vibrant art movement practiced by hundreds of painters, many of whom are part of the Tingatinga Arts Cooperative Society (TACS) in Dar es Salaam.

TACS artists often depict iconic African wildlife in whimsical poses, using industrial paint and masonite board — just as the founder once did. Their works are bold, joyous, and instantly captivating.

A Visit to the Tingatinga Cooperative Gallery

In September 2019, I had the chance to visit the Tingatinga Arts Cooperative Society in person. The gallery was buzzing with energy — tourists browsing, artists painting, and hundreds of vibrant works lining every wall.
