Breakfast with a View: Balloons over the Serengeti

Photographed on June 30, 2023, around 7:00 a.m. at Seronera Wildlife Lodge, Serengeti National Park

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day — and in the Serengeti, it often comes with a view that stirs your soul. That morning at Seronera Wildlife Lodge, as I sat down with a cup of coffee, the savannah began its quiet performance: the ascent of hot-air balloons across a pale blue sky.

Like dream bubbles rising — balloons lift gently over the endless plains of Serengeti

The silhouettes of leafless acacia trees framed the scene as the first balloon hovered over the golden land. The air was still, the breakfast warm, and time seemed to slow to match the grace of the morning lift-off.

A single balloon floats silently, tracing the contours of the horizon

Each balloon drifted like a gentle thought — floating, observing, exploring. It was as though the sky was reflecting the serenity of the landscape below.

Golden beams break through the clouds, casting a heavenly glow on a quiet morning flight

The clouds parted ever so slightly, allowing sunlight to pierce through in dramatic rays — "God’s light," as many would call it. The balloon rose just in time to meet those beams. It felt symbolic, as if the land itself was offering a silent blessing.

Rays of hope — a balloon drifts into the morning light, welcoming a new day over the Serengeti

Looking out over the restaurant balcony, I realized that this was not just a meal — it was an encounter with wonder. These are the small moments the Serengeti offers so generously, if you’re willing to rise with the sun.

And then there are people who help make these places feel like home…

A warm handshake with the lodge manager — the kind of hospitality that stays with you long after the journey ends
