A Night at Serengeti Embalakai Authentic Camp

When people imagine a safari in the Serengeti, they often picture endless plains filled with lions, elephants, and giraffes. But what about the nights? Where do you stay after the game drive is over, the sun dips behind the horizon, and the lions begin their nocturnal patrols?

In November 2019, I found myself in the middle of the Serengeti, checking into a tented hotel with the most wonderful name: Serengeti Embalakai Authentic Camp. And let me tell you—it truly lives up to the word authentic!

Forget fancy hotel lobbies and marble bathrooms—my “room” here was a canvas tent pitched on a wooden deck, with cozy beds, wicker chairs, and the Serengeti breeze drifting in. From the porch, I could sip tea while watching the savannah stretch endlessly before me. At night, instead of city noise, I drifted to sleep to the symphony of nature: crickets, hyenas whooping in the distance, and maybe (just maybe) a lion reminding us all who the real king of the Serengeti is.

The central lounge tent was surprisingly comfortable. Sofas, wooden tables, even juice pitchers waiting for tired travelers—it felt like someone had picked up a living room and gently set it down in the wild. Here, guests shared stories of close encounters with elephants or debates about whether the cheetah or the leopard is the better hunter.

But my favorite part of the camp was the fire pit. Picture this: chairs arranged in a circle, lanterns flickering in the trees, and the African night sky putting on its greatest show. The Maasai guides stood nearby, their red shúkà glowing in the firelight, telling stories that made the night even more magical.

There’s something about a campfire in the Serengeti—it makes strangers into friends and turns silence into laughter.
